March 1970 was the opening of Alabama's most popular paid tourist attraction-The Alabama Space and Rocket Center. (now called the US Space and Rocket Center) Owned by the State of Alabama it was an adventure in making learning about space fun for children and adults. It exceeded this goal and Spacecamp was launched in the 1980's. Enjoy these 1970's memories of the early days of the center. The Alabama Space and Rocket Center opened 5 years after the failure of the Space City USA Themepark 5 miles to the west of the facility which was a commercial venture. The new Space and Rocket Center facility had first-class Smithsonian -style exhibits and NASA Tours. Please feel free to submit addition photos of 1970's exhibits, people and souvenir shop valuables to huntsvillerewound@gmail.com.
